Ever since Google was reported to have been working on this project of self-driving cars, there have also been issues related to this product. The very first issue that arose was the road traffic security. Because even those cars which people drive are not guaranteed to not have any accidents, besides people witness numerous of them on daily basis. Then how about cars which won’t be driven by anybody but some software only? To what extent such cars can be given a guarantee of not having any accident? What if the system stops working in the ongoing traffic? Many of such issues of this nature were there in people’s mind. Further to this insecurity being caused by self-driving cars the recent internal report coming from FBI suggests that driverless cars carry a higher rate of being misused as lethal weapon by terrorists or criminals as well.
An internal recent FBI report suggests that the self driving cars are being considered as being a “game changing” vehicle. The self-driving cars carry a higher risk of being misused fully by criminals as potential lethal weapon and can be exploited by terrorists as self-driving bombs. The report further states the predictions coming from FBI which suggest that driverless cars would in the long run “have a high impact on transforming what both law enforcement and its adversaries can operationally do with a car.”
Google’s driverless car would not have any steering and would be traveling at just 25 mph, such cars will use a system consisting of lidar i.e laser ranging, radar, video cameras as well as the GPS, the car would highly depend on the GPS system as it will be driving force, instructing the car when to turn or stop or slow down or speed up or when a car is behind or in front and so on.
Criminals as they are always in search of ways they could use to cause harm or damage, for them, self driving cars can might be a rolling bombing platforms for terrorist which will work same as a suicide bombing but without a person driving.
Moreover, the report also states ”Autonomy … will make mobility more efficient, but will also open up greater possibilities for dual-se applications and way for a car to be more of a potential lethal weapon that it is today, “
It has further been noted that shooters may exploit such cars by shooting from the window without having to worry about watching the roads.
Google statement happens to be otherwise which suggests, “They’ll be designed to operate safely and autonomously without requiring human intervention. Our software and sensors do all the work. The vehicles will be very basic but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button.”
Yet again, as everything else has some positive and negative aspects attached to them, so do these driverless cars, according to FBI, such cars can also play a major role in investigating crimes, keeping an eye on a suspect and so on. “Surveillance will be made more effective and easier, with less of a chance that a patrol car will lose sight of a target vehicle,” included in the report. “In addition, algorithms can control the distance that the patrol car is behind the target to avoid detection or intentionally have a patrol car make opposite turns at intersections, yet successfully meet up at later points with the target.” Google has been working very closely in order to make the their self-driving cars as safe as possible so that people could make the most of it.
